Family Promise of St. Tammany is a program to help homeless children and their families to achieve independence through the hospitality of volunteers in an interfaith network of congregations and a small FPST staff who assists with case management and transportation. When families enter the FPST program, they receive the following:
Participating host congregations are located on both the East and West side of St. Tammany Parish. Each host congregation will provide shelter and meals for participating families for one week. At the end of each week on Sunday, the participating families will be moved to the next host congregation. Van transportation is provided for families when they move from one host congregation to another.
Participating families will leave the host congregation at the necessary time each day to arrive at the Day Center by 7 am. They will leave the Day Center shortly before 5pm and arrive at the host congregation no later than 5:30/6pm where they will eat dinner and spend the night. A van service will provide transportation to and from the Day Center each day.
The families are thoroughly screened and there will be requested documents such as a state ID, Driver’s License, Birth Certificate, SS Card, Proof of Guardianship for minors, and other critical records. The family must be a St. Tammany resident for at least 30 days prior to applying. Guests will be screened for active drug and alcohol use, a criminal records history, and a poor credit history. No families involved in domestic violence can be accepted. Families must have a source of income or actively seeking employment. An agreement of action steps and a progress plan is required of the families and will be signed before entering the program.
